                                                           By Tom Trace

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”.  That’s a phrase that most of us have heard since our childhood.  Truth-be-told here are many foods that are health smart, but any way you slice it, the apple never falls far from the top spot of “must eat” foods.

They are many attributes of this sweet, delicious fruit that makes it a worthwhile addition (or mainstay) to your daily diet. Let’s begin with Vitamins.  We all need plenty of Vitamin C in our diets to boost our immune systems.  We need to fight against everything from the common cold to cancer.  Yep, the apple contains Vitamin C. The more apples you eat, the more C you get! Easy!

If you desire a candy bar during the day, substituting an apple can help address your sugar craving at a serious caloric savings.  In addition to the craving savings, apples contain good cholesterol.  Too much bad cholesterol can definitely increase your risk for heart disease.

Did you know that apples help prevent tooth decay?  Juices in apples kill mouth bacteria.  Just ask your family dentist!

If these accolades aren’t enough for you to add an apple a day to your menu, consider that research has proven that this wonderful fruit offers many other sweet benefits including protecting the brain from disease. A Study on mice at Cornell University found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer's disease. (credit Healthdiaries.com).
Aside from all the fantastic ways an apple assists in bolstering your health, they simply taste great and are still affordable. Eat one with breakfast. Pack an apple with your daily lunch. Or enjoy one after dinner. Soon you will reap a bushel of health benefits!
